Learn what the Ithaqua Elder One Box adds to Cthulhu: Death May Die, who it's for, and how to decide if it's worth adding to your collection.
Quick answer
The Cthulhu: Death May Die - Elder One Box - Ithaqua is a worthwhile expansion if you already own the base game and want a fresh, wind-themed challenge that works with any episode. If you're new to the game or prefer narrative campaigns over one-off boss fights, you might want to look elsewhere.
What the Ithaqua Box Adds to Your Game
This expansion box is designed to be used in combination with any Episode from any season of Cthulhu: Death May Die. That means you don't need a specific scenario to enjoy Ithaqua; you can slot him into your existing games for a new experience.
The box introduces Ithaqua, the Wind-Walker, as a new Elder One. He brings his Shantak followers, adding a wind-themed challenge that changes how you approach the game. Instead of just a new enemy, you get a whole new set of threats to manage.
Because it's compatible with any episode, this box offers a lot of replay value. You can face Ithaqua in different scenarios, which keeps the game fresh even after multiple playthroughs.
How It Compares to Other Expansions
Unlike season-specific expansions that add new episodes or storylines, the Elder One Box focuses solely on a new boss. This makes it a more focused purchase: you're not getting new scenarios, but you are getting a new challenge that can be inserted into existing ones.
If you're looking for more narrative content or new investigators, this box won't provide that. It's strictly about the boss fight, so it's best for players who enjoy the tactical puzzle of taking down a powerful enemy.
The price point is lower than full season expansions, making it an accessible way to extend your game without a big investment. However, you should already own a base game or season box to use it.
Decision rules: Is the Ithaqua Box right for you?
- Do you already own a base game or season box?: This expansion is not a standalone game. You need at least one version of Cthulhu: Death May Die to use the Ithaqua box. If you don't have the base game, buy that first. Check your collection for a compatible base game before purchasing.
- Do you enjoy boss-focused challenges?: If you like the tactical puzzle of taking down a powerful Elder One, this box adds a new twist with Ithaqua's wind theme and Shantak followers. If you prefer narrative-driven campaigns, this might feel thin. Consider your group's preference for boss fights vs. story scenarios.
- Are you looking for replay value?: Because Ithaqua can be used with any episode, you can face him in different scenarios, increasing replayability. If you tend to play each episode only once, the added variety may be less valuable. Think about how often you replay episodes before deciding.
