Once upon a time in the infinite and ever-changing Great Library, there lived a fairy tale in search of being told, for that is how such stories survive and grow. It was the tale of an impossible theft, so it found a target, it found a thief, and soon after that, the Scryptwyrm found that a vital song had been stolen from its mind.

Song of the Scryptwyrm is a stand-alone solo mystery RPG that takes place in the Great Library. You assume the role of a Librarian's apprentice and - together with your familiar - gather clues, identify the culprit, and recover a stolen song.

This 60-page, full color game is a hack of the Hints & Hijinx solo mystery game system from Pandion Games and can optionally be played as a sequel to the CRIT Award-winning solo RPG The Librarian's Apprentice, continuing your journey to becoming a Librarian. It contains:

  • 36 potential suspects, contacts, or witnesses, plus generators for creating your own
  • 18 locations, plus generators for creating your own
  • Tables of motives, methods, and opportunities
  • Ephemera from around the Great Library
  • Only human-made art, including elements from Alderdoodle, Galen Pejeau, Emily Entner, and the public domain.

Key Features

  • Immerse yourself immediately in the story, learning the rules as you play.
  • Gather clues with the aid of your training as a Librarian's apprentice, your familiar, and your Collection - a small oracle deck that reinforces the themes of the Library.
  • Craft a ritual for reading your Collection  - a small oracle deck - and use it to flavor your experiences.
  • Populate the Library with provided characters and locations or create your own using generator tables.
  • Explore the game itself for secret messages.

To play this game, you will need:

  • Three 6-sided dice
  • A deck of playing cards
  • Something to write with

The book also contains information for accessing bonus digital content, including files of optional oracle deck cards and a secrets guide with hints about the messages hidden within game, as well as directions for those who wish to purchase a physical copy of the optional cards.

This game is designed for both new and seasoned players, and is recommended for ages 10+.

Evelyn J. ★★★★★

The "story in search of being told" hook genuinely pulled me in, and the way the rules weave that narrative into every roll makes the whole session feel like we're writing a living fairy tale rather than just playing a game. My group finished our first adventure in about four hours, and we're alread

Robert ★★★★★

The fairy-tale framing of the Great Library hooked me immediately, and the prose is so evocative that I actually read the opening chapter aloud to my group just to set the mood. It’s a rare RPG that makes you want to savor the storytelling as much as the mechanics.

Benjamin T. ★★★★☆

I wish the rulebook included a few more example adventures, but the core fairy-tale mechanic is genuinely clever and has already sparked some wild storytelling in my group.
