The god-awful box art almost scared me off, but the actual gameplay is a revelation—the blend of city-building and warrior command in ancient Cadmea is so tight it feels like every turn matters. My group has already played it four nights in a row, and the rising-to-glory arc never gets old.

It hits that sweet spot between strategy and luck — the noble house mechanics keep everyone engaged even when it’s not your turn. Took us about an hour to get the rules down, but once we did, the city-building flow felt rewarding. Just wish the box was a bit sturdier for how often I’ll be pulling it

I’ve played a few rounds now and the city-building mechanic really shines once you get the hang of it. Only wish the rulebook explained the warrior commands a bit more clearly, but it’s still a solid strategy game.
